Sometimes doing something without a plan can bring so much joy.. .

Today was not one of my free days.. but somehow decided to make savoury sweets something traditional which we make during our festivals. And somehow, getting gifted with Sweet potatoes,  I was looking at what to do it with and bang came a very good and warm memory of cold winter nights of Shillong, Bihu time and mom and her sisters along with mini me getting together to make sweets and savouries.. what we in Assam call Pitha. My aunts would be coming to visit us for Bihu.

It would be a co-ordinated effort of who will make the dough of sweet potatoes, channa dal, and so on.. , the sisters would sit around the heater in the cold kitchen room after dinner and arrange everything and cajole me to help them.. I would be responsible for making the pockets where stuffings would be placed. I was taught how to get it right while my mom fried them.. and various other steps would be performed as we went around and soon it would be a rhythm and between laughter, jokes and some warm gossip, we would have made quite a variety of sweets.. and I would not realise where time went..

Today looking at the sweet potatoes.. I was transported into those times, quickly called my aunt for the proportion and recipe and actuall for the first time made everything from scratch and it turned out pretty well.. I was happy and I thought to myself happily : This I dedicate to you Ma.. since you made it a ritual and you loved doing this.. :)   a happy dedication..

Its so interesting how warm memories can remove day time or busyness aside and makes a complex task so simple.. just because this task was associated not only with happiness but a sense of belonging and security … deep down inside.. so mundane, yet so deep..

What memory of yours can you associate with to brighten up doing some silly or mundane tasks.. Have you thought about it ?? Life becomes so much more content.. :)

Swing

Image via Wikipedia

Sipping a cup of tea, listening to modern Bengali songs and working.. with the wind caressing my cheeks there is this feeling of well being which I always look forward to.

I have this calendar of a very naughty puppy who is looking at me with such mischievous eyes that I feel like doing something really childlike like skipping and fly with my arms wide..  And I did see that whenever I wanted to feel like a child, my best way to access that state is to spread my arms wide and run around pretending to fly. And I did that while we were on a team building activity.. I hope my colleagues did not notice it. While they were discussing strategy of a game, I quickly did a round of flying on my own.. around the green lawn.. he he …

Have you wondered what makes you go back to being a child.. ??

I can remember so many things now that I contemplate..

  • Swinging fast on a swing makes me go back to free thinking with no stress..
  • Sometimes playing catch triggers that feeling of catching something precious and feeling happy to do that
  • Stealing something sumptuous to eat just for the heck of it…and deliberately getting caught..
  • Making pictures of clouds takes me back to when I was little and used to be in music class and when I got bored of notes,  I used to just look up at the clouds and guess the different shapes the cloud created as it passed by..
  • Having a tamarind sweet reminds me of the time, when while returning from school, we used to make a beeline for the sweet and sour tamarind which used to put the zing in our being as we walked back home..

That is another key I  access when I want to feel happy and free from this adult life.. :) temporarily of course.. :)

Eye for an eye

Well.. after a relaxing and beautiful holiday, am back with loads of memories again.

This time around.. it was difficult arranging the holiday the way we usually do. Murphy decided to visit us just at the time when we were on the brink of having it just right.

Well after a heavy bout of running around, we did manage to have a part of our holidays in place.

And it made the vacation all the more sweeter.

Having friends come over from far is a pleasure and its nice to just be yourself with friends.

So here I am right now, listening to country music, having pizza and wine with very good company around.. all in all an almost perfect holiday.. :)
