Growing up and in college I have faced shortage of water and flooding. Shillong is a place, where water is scarce and well it was part of life.. and then came Guwahati where rains would bring in flash floods of a daily kind… buses would be splashing through water, we would be wading through muddy slush and well, days went by,

Cut to Bangalore, relief about the fact that rains were fun.. and water did not stay.. yeah once in a while, when returning from Richmond Road on my sturdy Kinetic Honda, I would be riding through one of the overflowing manholes… and maybe in Oct during Durga Puja, Ulsoor would have water gushing through but I would ride through it..

Time moves on and I have some grey highlights and well its been a long time since the serene picturesque place I rented, has been turned into gallis and tightly squeezed houses and flats… and well I have to really stretch my neck to see the sunrise… and though I have birds and trees aplenty growing on their own, it feels like I am lost in some concrete heap of junk..and though people talk about global warming, at a very very low and localised level, we are already facing the affects of over population and bad drainage planning or NO Drainage planning while building houses.

Come rains, from the past 3 years, the basement in my old and dilapidated and comfortable apt ( why is always old and dilapidated =comfortable ?? I wonder ) gets totally flooded and I thought we had seen the highest level of flooding BUT NO, I think the universe loves playing games with me… and this Friday, it threw me a sixer…

Getting ready for the monsoon, the apt guys built and built canals, cemented drains, closed probable holes, BUT LO, nature has a way of creeping through if it wants to… Rains this Friday just about had everything floating in the water. My Bolero somehow, just somehow managed to grip and stay right there while, weeds, junk, garbage floated all around… YUCK… and to top it all, there was no power or water… SIGH.. for 2 days… I was like about to tear my hair in frustration, since we could not go out, had three members in the family, who had to eat and poop,.. and NO WATER, BUhuhuhuh !!! How can one control Poop… !!! LOL…..

Then, well, sun shined, and late Sunday evening, we were saved…. I think this is one of the few times, I was really stressed…had a stress headache.. going through food but no water, poop but no water, no bath, no power, just sitting tight… I think having my Dad go through this at his age really got to me..:(

Test comes in all shapes and situations,… its ok to control one’s own functions… and everything related to my body,… when my loved ones around me go through the same suffering, its so painful.. Lesson to be noted…

To feel somewhat positive, I have bought flowers, and plants to bring in some greens, ( I am not the plant type mind you, though I love well maintained plants, but never been one to dig through mother earth) hoping that it cheers me up. Dad is here and he has green fingers so I have brought some seeds and stuff from Assam which I will grow at home.. the plan is some native greens, cherry tomatoes, some more greens, and some roses and of course how can I forget tulsi plant..

It feels like I am growing roots, even though I am actually have thoughts of going back home… Well, so be it..

Change seems to be the only constant in my life and has been always.. so moment to moment, am living in change, getting ready for anything, well almost anything..

Next plan is to buy a bigger drum to store water, till we move to my new place. and that has its own shortcomings…

Pallavi, I tell myself, learn to live with shortcomings… always a part of living… lesser the better…

And I still like to think, I love rain… Yet……it scares me.. now.. Sigh… no I still like to think I love rain…

Well, Durga Pujo is undoubtedly my favorite time of the year.

Right from when I was a child who could grasp the meaning of festivities.. this is one time of the year which used to make me feel very content and extremely blessed.

Mahalaya would be the time when we start getting excited and joyful at the oncoming of Pujo.

It would bring forth holidays and then my mashis ( aunts) getting excited and welcoming the Pujo.

Back home in Shillong, it was a time, all the mashis would get together and they would chatter and natter on what they would get this Pujo. And who will wear what on which day.

As a child, Ma would take me to the pandal in the morning for Pushpanjali. I would see my classmates there too. We used to gather mostly at Ramakrishna Mission to pay our respects to Ma Durga.

I would listen avidly to stories told by my parents on how Ma Durga would be coming home this time. There is a significance to every mode she uses to come to her parents home. I personally loved her story and her strength of character and believed in her energy more than anything…

Today when I explore different paths of healing and learning, I am not surprised that her form is present across all cultures.

I remember I had a dress for the day time and for the night time.. it used to be fun..

We used to share between friends how many idols of Ma Durga we saw..

As we grew, Pujo used to be a landmark of our progressive youth..

It was kind of Sunday church where we would wear new clothes and preen around. And the food is awesome.. we would get to eat all kinds of food during this time.
Here is something you can try during Puja..

It was a playground for kids, a time to get together and be a part of the festivities for the older children. Teenagers would spend time giggling or showing themselves off for the crowd or that special someone.. For the newly weds it would be their first Pujo, for all, young and old, it would be a time to seek the Ma’s blessings and revel in her presence.. and her beautiful divine energy..

Evenings would be spent with family and all would gather at the temple and then go pandal hopping. Once upon a time, Shillong was a great place to be for the Pujas.. its been quiet I think for a while after the politics took over..

I loved the time where the young guys would start dancing with the dhuna..
The drums still echo in my ear and I love to swing to the beat of tak du ma dum …

I can sit through the chantings and the pujas non stop..

The food would be awesome. Having hot kichudi and then watching the program in the evenings…

Then again.. get ready the next morning..

I remember there was a big hullaballu over Kumari Puja..

Then it would be Dashami.. the time would fly in the blink of an eye and it was time to look at the mother’s face via the reflection of the water. And also watch the married ladies play with Shidur.. (vermilion)

It would be a time to say goodbye and well look forward to another Pujo the next year.

Today Pujo is not what it used to be. I do try and keep up the joy and the pace and the excitement.. but its all inside.. and sometimes, its nice to see a crowd in the various Pandals in Bangalore.. but its not the same..

Pujo at home with family and friends and people you know.. off the street and off the corners of the street.. has a poignant joy and nostalgia to it..

A time for giving and receiving, a time to share the divine joy.. and a time to just dance to the rhythm of the feminine divine…

Yes, its always will be and always is the favorite time of the year.. I love the feminine divine and all that she stands for… I bow to you Ma, and seek your blessings.. and welcome you….

May you bless the humanity and take away all our sufferings and help us have a perfect human rebirth again…

I wish all my friends who worship this deity, a very Happy Durga Puja

Well, this was one of those days where I had some free time and as usual, I planned on going to the library to return my load of books and get another load.

Parking was available somewhat far away next to one of the famous landmarks in Blore: Safina Plaza. Now lot of new things have been happening around the area such as sprouting of new buildings, one ways and change in parking arrangement.

Just like any other citizen, I usually take all this in stride, wonder for a few minutes and go back to my daily life or the usual routine. Maybe browse around the Plaza for something good and of course make it to the library.

I had to cross the road for the usual reasons. YES to get to the other side.. hahaha !! so that I could walk to the library.

I saw a traffic policeman lazily watching me park and get out of my car. He kept watching people beyond me.. but I was hoping that I had everything right, papers, parking and all that blah.

Since I read somewhere that there was to be NO JAYWALKING I meekly went to the zebra crossing. The moment I stepped into that area, there was the LOUD .. BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP.. BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..

MY heart just stopped and the first thing that came to my mind was GOOD LORD.. did I step into some DO NOT STEP zone.. Nowadays you dont know what rules apply where and when.. with the elections just out, you would be liable to see new stuff happening for which there would be no reason at all..

OK so then and there I knew how it was like to be a deer frozen by headlights.

I frantically looked around to the policeman imagining him to come at me with a “GOTCHA” look .But he was standing there as usual.. So No I have not violated any rule.. Was there a camera and automatic receipt coming out of somewhere… since he was so cool.. :O

I was remembering the meaning of JAYWALK. My mind was a BLANK. What was the meaning of JAYWALK.. SHIT.. Where do I go now..

And the siren went on and on BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..

AAAAAA…. somebody stop it……

Then suddenly, I saw all the cars stand still and seeming to wait for me. And just as luck would have it, I was the only one there…

EUREKA….. !!!!!!!

I got it… I HAD TO CROSS THE bludy ROAD.

I went red as beetroot and walked quickly across feeling like a fool..

As soon as I crossed the road some more people stopped at the same place and off it went again..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP..

To the startled surprise of the public.. hahahahah a:)

I was chuckling to myself.. ..as I went ahead with my errand..

PHEW… Why cant they put some button for us to press before we cross the road like they have in the US. Is the sound necessary.

And to beat that, once the cars got over their surprise as well, they did not bother to stop for the pedestrians… Well no surprise there…

So much for technology and common sense or lack of it… GAHHHH !!!

Well I am glad that despite the “recession” a lot is happening in and around Bangalore.

Here are some more places you could haunt when you have the time and inclination.

Tuck into Karnataka cuisine @ The Hindu

BANGALORE: A 12-day “Karnataka Festival – A Cultural Curry” showcasing the culture, art, heritage and food of the State began at The Chancery on Lavelle Road here on Wednesday.
Promote

The festival, on till June 14, is an effort to preserve the rich tradition and heritage of Karnataka and to promote Karnataka’s art and culture, said Subroto Banerjee, General Manager of the hotel.

He said that the food was prepared under the supervision of Chef Govindaiah, who is a native of Magadi. He has over two decades experience in preparing south Indian food and has had stints in several well-known hotels.

Some of the food at the festival includes rice roti, kori roti with chicken masala, chitranna, puliogre, fish fry, kosumbari, ragi mudde, Mysore pak and jackfruit payasam.

While the lunch is priced at Rs. 349 per head, dinner is Rs. 399, plus taxes.

If you like plays maybe you could walk into Alliance Francaise.

Kharaashein is a play by the famous film lyricist and poet Gulzar based on his poems and short stories. The play is conceptualised by Salim Arif. The language is quintessentially Gulzar, the kind that draws his fans in droves.Kharaashein means scratches. Author talks about the wounds inflicted by terrible events during 1947, then again from time to time till today. In the name of religion, killings still continue inflicting scars on the face of humanity. But in every atrocity perpetrated by religious zealots, there are human faces that brave the odd, put their own lives at risk and help people irrespective of their religion, cast and creed. Kharaashein is an emotional experience one must go through and be stirred to the depth of one’s soul. It’s the kind of play where you invest 100 minutes of your time to witness the play and the play stays with you for a long long time caressing and cajoling your finer feelings.

Sipping Juices.. and more juices.. welcoming Nimbooz.. my favorite drink

Addicted to comics : Justice League and Amar Chitra Katha.. Reliving old times.. when I used to hide comics inside text books.. .

Bewildered at crashing my E 71 just while I was doing my config update. I was glad to go without phone.. for 10 days.. till hubby forced me to have a standby.. sigh.. well .. what would have happened in the good old days when there were no phones.. we all survived.. actually I like my phoneless status.. maybe its time I give up my mobile.. technology sucks sometimes..

Satisfied at decluttering old books which I have not touched. Went and sold them at Blossoms.

Overjoyed at finding a secret parking space if I want to browse in MG Road..

Terrified of the heat that burns me if I have to walk in the afternoons.. and its only the beginning of summer.

Encouraging all to go register yourself in www.jaagore.com

Planning a volunteering activity to teach at schools and or donating textbooks, storybooks, reference books to institutions that need it. Email me if you can help.

Enjoyed watching Sex and the City movie alone at home on a lazy evening… liked it.. I love Mr Big.. and I love the idea of the women friends.. they never go passe.. Made me long for the days in college when me and my women friends used to hang out together.. its difficult to find that as you grow older.. on this line of thought I was really impressed to see a friend’s photo page in facebook where she put up photos of friends ( then and now) she grew up together and are still together. Now thats what I would call friendship.. everlasting.. very rare to be in and around the same area as one moves on in life.. … well thats why we have Sex and the City.. hahaha!!

Craving for Ice golas.. lemony ones coz thats my fav flavor.. I think I shall make do with kulfi but its not the same thing.

Finally getting into working on THE house.. keeping in mind the recession and the unpredictable salary flow.. I think am going to move in with the basics and will do the rest in phases.. sigh..

Tempted to go get some spaghetti strapped dresses.. recession in mind… need to do this the old way.. go into the stores which I used to raid … long back… hope they are still there.. hahaha !!

Looking for a change.. in everything.. the creation is in process.. Maybe I will go bald..

Pissed off with my hair dresser who cut my hair without the style in place. And she has been cutting my hair for the last 10 years… the same bloody style and she forgets something important.. and really puts me off.. all the more when she says … that she has done what she usually does.. GAHHHH… Time for a new hair dresser and some blue highlights.. buhahahah

Embarrassed at forgetting my car number. Yours truly blithely tells her old car number when her car was blocking someone else and the poor security fella runs all around asking all and sundry whose car is the one with the new number ( mine). Suffice it to say that I was thoroughly red in the face after finishing my tasks and come to see a group waiting in front of my car and the security fella looking at me as if he was about to burst a blood vessel. And well moral of the story is that you will never see me there.. *million blushes wishing there was a hole that sucked me in *

Over my hat at some @&^@!$%#@%@# thats going on now.. ok its just me.. no one else..

Peaceful with the way yoga is going.. made me go off drinks.. well good for me.. I shudder to think I will go off non veg.. the urge you see.. well its all in the mind and all about choice.. and I know what my choice will be… buhahaha yoga or no yoga.. moi the mountain lady give up non veg.. well thats thought for food..

Thinking of starting a new business.. but zilch monies for that.. so keep thinking..

In the name of recession, seeing many things that really does not have anything related to recession.. LOL.. so what if this is just another scapegoat reason to get away with all the uncomfortable decisions which would be usually not be taken… tough times but heck.. dont have to rub it in …. its scary enough to think of the consequences.. if it does strike one..

Aghast at the crime aspects that have gone up. People in Bangalore.. please

Central Lock your car when you are driving around the city. There are miscreants who plan and target cars and bang the windows and scare the driver and maybe car jack it in broad daylight. This happened many a times in front of the Oasis Mall during busy hours. No use going to the police.. they ask some questions like why didnt you take photographs, etc ( well if you are scared, do you really think you will take photos). This happened to a colleague of mine and another witnessed a similar action.. and though they say that they have nabbed the dudes.

If you are driving back home late at night, central lock your car and DO NOT stop if any biker asks you to. Thats another means of car jacking or robbing you. Just drive by .. no matter what..

Moral of the story : DO NOT STOP for anyone.. when driving..

Interested ??? in this.. check it out.. ( i have never been to one )

Well Bangalore seems to be only city which is having so many crisis at one time..

Power cuts.. : well more power to those who have inverters.. but heck I live in this old apt which I am going to leave in a few months time so am doing with silence..

Its actually bliss when the power is off at home since all around too there is no TV or no noise.. and I can actually hear the birds..

Sudden spurt of rains have given some natural comfort cooling at home.

At work, there is power saving strategy going on in all aspects. Human presence does bring up the humidity along with lights.. so its very uncomfortable. I realised that if the lights are not switched on, it is pretty tolerable.

Usage of phone lights, usage of extra monitors, making sure that small groups use small conference rooms to conserve energy… all being implemented.

Technology and its after effects.. what next.. ??

Fuel Crisis – Well after circumventing slowly and repeatedly with a helpless expression in my face the different petrol bunks, they finally fell for the hapless female in distress and secretly made a deal with me to give me fuel at a particular time. And I did have the benefit of being the regular customer and all that. All thanks to me filling from the same bunk just because it was close and convenient.

I am unabashedly glad that I am a woman and can get what I want just by altering my approach strategy.

On a different note, I like the Aamir Khan ads that are being aired.

Breaking News

Blasts in Bangalore.. !!! FISH !!! Just when I was thinking that what could be worse ??

From rediff

From IBN Live

India Times

All say different figures.. and a friend says there have been 12 blasts.. Go figure..

Am staying put.. will go in a while.. no use panicking..

FELUDA PHEROT !
THE RETURN OF FELUDA

(A Play in Bengali)

Feluda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feluda) aka Prodosh C. Mitter is the fictional detective created by Satyajit Ray, and is the protagonist of two of his fillms and thirty five novels and short stories. He is an iconic character in the world of Bengali literature and ‘Feluda Pherot’ marks the return of the much loved sleuth for its second ever stage adaptation.

It is the first ever non-canonical work based on a Ray created character either for the stage or for the screen. At one level, ‘Feluda Pherot’ is a gripping murder mystery with a twist in the tail. At another level, it is a philosophical classic deconstructing the alternative norms of good and evil, as personified by Feluda and his Moriarty-like arch rival, Maganlal Meghraj.

The form of the play also deviates at points from conventional proscenium – it has projected video clippings in a parallel narrative, elements of Third Theatre, suggestive rather than explicit sets, elements of the age-old Bengali folk tradition of ‘Jaatraa’ or ‘Paalaa Gaan’ retrofitted in the contemporary context, silhouetted use of choreographed Contemporary Dance Movements and a dedicated soundtrack.

This play also marks the collaboration between film personalilities from Kolkata and theatre workers from Bangalore.

USHA GANGULI, a Sangeet Akademi awardee, leading the theatre group Rangakarmee for nearly twenty-five years now, remains essentially an actress who loves to take on challenging roles and seek to grow in the process. Trained as a dancer in the classical Indian modes, she strikes the delicate balance between formal rhythm and reality in the raw. Rangakarmee, which had its inception in January 1976, spearheads the Hindi theatre in Kolkata today, with fourteen productions on its live repertoire.

ANTARYATRA is designed and performed by Usha Ganguli herself. In the play, she attempts to explore the Indian woman’s psyche through a melange of characters. It takes us through a very personal and inner-driven journey in theatre. Ganguli has played a variety of women characters (Nora, Himmat Mai, Rudali, Kamla, Anima) on stage and her experiences obviously enrich her one-woman show. ANTARYATRA is a tribute to at least a dozen crucial female heroines played by Ganguli who are representatives of real-life women – each one belonging to a distinct social space and yet bound in some way by the virtue of being a woman.
