Colored in Pink

Well the time has come again to be colored in pink if you read this. One can call it whatever terminology the management wants but its very clear that slowdown is creeping upon us very surely..

New Delhi: Wipro Technologies, an IT solution firm, is screening around 2,400-3000 employees (4-5 percent of the total workforce) on the grounds of non-performance. According to sources, around 1000 employees are being given the pink slips, while about 2000 are allowed to move on.

As per a report in The Economic Times, the company will provide some of the employees with counseling for boosting up their performance. Pratik Kumar, Wipro’s Corporate VP (human resources), confirming the move, said, “It’s a regular annual exercise. As the appraisal cycle gets over, a multi-layer review happens. Following that, people who have fallen in the lower quadrants of performance are put on watch. Some are asked to pull up and others are asked to move on.” It includes all the 60,000 global IT services employees from the senior leadership team down to the person with one-year experience.

This reminds me of the tough times that we went through back in 2000. Seeing friends and family losing jobs and experiencing the trauma again and again through friends. Its reiterates the fact that sometimes we have to be strong and believe that this too shall pass without as much devastation as it caused last time.

I experienced this situation in my previous company. There was this head of security or someone who had been stationed in the border before his present employment in that organization and he suggested to the management of cutting the enemy out.

On that D-Day, first the telephone lines were cut. Then the network connection went. Then we were met and told that a list will be read out and the names read out should move to another floor where papers and 2 months salary would be given and they were to leave the room at that very moment without any goodbye.

Everyone was worried about whose name would be read. My hearbeat went a notch higher. Suddenly the group head appeared and read the list one by one and my dear friend who was dressed in her Onam finery ( it was Onam that day) was asked to go. It was painful. There were no goodbyes. There were nothing.. Just a list of names.

This procedure would go on for a days till the management decided on a final number of people whom they wanted to stay..

The security guard was heard bragging that this was the way they would creep up on the enemy and make then helpless to their attack..

And I thought.. we were working our behinds off to earn the money and when did we become the enemy of the same parent we worked for to have us treated so crudely.

But well at that time, there were no justification. Just a silent acceptance and at any moment it could happen to me..

Bad memories.. it should not happen to anyone..  !!! Where will the axe fall next ???

On a different note :

While slowdown is creeping in.. we have this

Fat packages not enough; executives now want luxe cars too

Bangalore: Apart from hefty salary packages and other offerings CEOs in India now demand costliest cars too as part of their compensation. They choose expensive latest models such as Mercedes-Benz, Beamers, Audis, Porsches and Rolls-Royce.

The car mania is not restricted to a particular sector. ITes, BPO, banking, aviation and energy are among the major sectors from which CEOs ask for latest model cars, reported The Economic Times. Recently, a newly appointed CEO of a major retail company was offered a hefty salary package, but his demands went much beyond just monetary considerations. When he asked for a Mercedes SLK 500 to drive to work, the company was happy to oblige.

Well if we have that as a requirement, no wonder, the packages for the junior level sals are getting cut :) :P .
